IT IS JOY THAT INVITES US

AN INVITATION TO SUPPORT ST. MICHAEL INDIAN SCHOOL

I LOOKED UP IN GOD'S WONDERFUL WAYS AND THOUGHT HOW LITTLE WE IMAGINE WHAT MAY BE THE RESULT OF LISTENING
& ACTING ON A DESIRE HE PUTS INTO THE HEART.

BUILDING OUR FUTURE SINCE 1902.

2021 ANNUAL APPEAL

In 1900, Saint Katharine Drexel began her work to establish educational facilities for the Native American people in what we know today as Saint Michaels, Arizona. With assistance from nine of her Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, Franciscan friars, and tribal leaders, she opened St. Michael Indian School (SMIS). Opened in December 1902, SMIS is the oldest and continuously operating school on the Navajo Nation.

Through the generosity of our community and supporters likes you, we continue Saint Katharine’s vision and continue the growth of our school for the benefit of serving our students with an education that prepares them for successful futures.

EVERY GIFT SUPPORTS OUR MISSION

SMALL TO LARGE, WE'LL PUT YOUR GIFT TO WORK.

St. Michael Indian school is located in the heart of the Navajo Nation, serving preschool through 12th-grade student from local communities in the surrounding area. SMIS is one of the only preschool education programs in the area. And, we qualify to receive Title 1 services for our students. All students qualified for free breakfast and lunch meals through Provision 3 of the Federal Free and Reduced Lunch Program.*

Accredited by WCEA and AdvancED, SMIS follows a philosophy to create a community of faith and learning where students can develop spiritually and intellectually. We strive to provide a comprehensive curriculum combining traditional academic subjects, formal religious instruction, a wide range of technology, art, athletic programs, and opportunities for philanthropic service in the community.

*Qualifiers for Title 1 and Provision 3 are based on higher percentage of low-income households.

  • Named best private K-12 schools in America 2021 as published on k12niche.com.
  • Our food service personnel were featured in the national No Hungry Kid Back-to-School series, highlighting solutions, challenges, and lingering questions around COVID-19 response and back-to-school efforts in tribal communities.
  • Two of our high school coaches received National Federation of State High Associations awards for excellence in coaching in Cross Country and Basketball. They were selected based upon their performance, lifetime community involvement, school involvement, and coaching philosophy.

I honestly believe in the education at SMIS. There aren't a lot of options for quality education. The classes are small, which gives a special opportunity for more time with student where they don't become a number and lost in the crowd.
