Student Visit Hozho Voices of Healing Center

ST MICHAELS, ARIZONA (FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2024)

As part of a service-learning class, students took part in a tour guided by Joshua Toddy of the Hozho Voices of Healing Center located in Borrego Pass, New Mexico. Hozho Voices of Healing Center’s mission is to revitalize the Diné agropastoral lifeways by offering services and programs to the Diné people.

Students learned about seed harvesting and how storage plays a crucial role in maintaining the viability of heirloom and ancestral seed strains; gardening, composting, and harvesting; land restoration using swale creation and catchment ponds, and understanding how the interconnectedness of land, animals and human well-being aims to promote a balanced and harmonious relationship.

Service learning is an educational approach that combines community service with academic coursework. Students engage in activities that meet community needs and reflect on these experiences to enhance their understanding of course material and develop critical thinking skills. This method emphasizes mutually beneficial partnerships between students and the community.
